About this project
REEDNESS WESLEYAN CHAPEL
Built in 1904, the Wesleyan Chapel served the local community for over 100 years until its closure in 2013 due to a declining elderly congregation. Planning Consent was applied for and granted during summer 2014 to convert the former chapel into a 2-bedroom dwelling.
The proposed conversion incl uded two bedrooms to the first floor, a feature stair case and balcony overlooking a spacious double height kitchen and dining area, and an adjacent living room to the ground floor. A study to the ground floor also provides the opportunity for a home office, doubling up as an occasional bedroom for guests.
Subtle decisions were made through the design process to prevent losing important features of the Chapel, these included; retaining areas of the double height space, working around exposed roof trussed, and setting the first-floor structure away from the external walls to avoid cutting across the tall arched chapel windows, which is a terrible detail.
Except for reopening a large triple arched window to the south transept, to retain the appearance and character of the Chapel there was minimal external intervention proposed.
